Welcome 2013...Happy New Year!

Happy Happy New Year everyone. I just wanted to share a little something with you to begin the New Year off on my blog. I had posted these little cuties to my Facebook page with the title "Happy Winter" and one of my friends asked if I would post a tutorial for them. So....here goes... I'm calling them my 'winter friends'.

For the base I used a clear plastic CD...the kind that comes inside the containers when you purchase blank Cd's in large quantities. You can check with any local business that purchase Cd's in large amounts and ask them for the clear plastic Cd's..which they probably just discard anyway.

I tried various types of inks on the plastic...but what I found that works the best is acrylic paint. The two snowmen are one stamp...purchased from my local craft store. I stamped the snowmen with black paint onto the CD without priming it...but to color the snowmen...the plastic must be primed. I use some Gallery Glass Window Color in 'Snow White' or you can used the 'Crystal Clear'.  This glass paint will only give the Cd a stained glass window effect...which is perfect for these. I primed both sides in case my students want to color the backs also. In the picture above...the middle Cd was painted on the back with white acrylic paint...but my favorite ones are the ones not paint white on the back.

Note: If you prefer to paint the back...you will not have to prime it...I did prime mines because my students don't like using paint as much as I do.

After priming or what I call "giving it some tooth"...it is ready to be painted. Since my students will be making these...I used SU markers instead of paint...see comment above on why I'm using markers instead of paint.  Since not all markers are created equally...please test before you make the real thing or just use paint.

After I colored in the image with the markers...I traced around the stamped image with a white chalk marker. White chalk sticks to this project really well. I found that the white gives the image some dimension...or make it pop...whichever way you want to say it.

For the snow effect at the bottom and for the snowflakes along the top and sides...I again use my chalk marker. Because the Cd's come with a hole in the center...I hot glued a button...on two of the snowmen pictured above...to match the colors of the hats and scarfs.

I hope you try this with your kids at home or school or with a local craft group. It was super easy and so much fun. I had to stop coloring in all the snowmen and save some for my students...it's really addictive and relaxing...you will see.

These snowmen will be placed in a card for my students to give to a family member or a friend. We do a card a month...so this will be our January 2013 card with a bonus gift. The Cd's can be hung by a window as decoration or as a sun-catcher.

Post pictures and leave a comment if you make these...I would love to see them.

Happy New Year...Peace!
